The wisdom of doshas will help you understand yourself

What are Doshas

Ayurveda says that the 5 elements of nature (earth, fire, water, air, and ether) manifest themselves in different proportions as doshas in our bodies. There are three doshas - Kapha, Pitta, and Vata.

We all have one dosha dominant in our body and a unique balance of all three. When these doshas get imbalanced because of poor diet, stress, or irregular routines, it often gives rise to lifestyle-related issues like digestive disorders, weight gain, anxiety, hyper-tension, etc.

Doshas stand out

Each dosha has its own set of attributes which define the personality and characteristics of a person.

Vata

  • Thin body frame, light muscles, usually underweight
  • Dry skin, hair, lips, tongue, and colon — leaning towards constipation
  • Cracked nails, hair, teeth and cracking joints

Pitta

  • Medium body frame and weight — seldom gain or lose much
  • Strong digestion and metabolism
  • May have grey hair, receding hairline or baldness; soft, shiny skin and hair
  • More prone to acne, rashes, and inflammations

Kapha

  • Large body frame, usually overweight
  • Steady appetite with slow metabolism leading to weight gain
  • Thick, smooth, oily hair and oily skin
  • Tends to talk and move slowly

Food has the power to heal, we just have to balance our meals as per our individual doshas. Altering meals as per the dominant dosha can help restore balance and manage many lifestyle-related health conditions.

Food can be medicine

As per a study titled 'Role of Ayurveda in Management of Lifestyle Disorders', published in World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research, lifestyle diseases arise from daily habits and inappropriate relationships with the environment, leading to dosha imbalances. The research suggests that adjusting diet and lifestyle according to individual dosha can harmonize these energies, thereby preventing or managing lifestyle-related diseases.

A study cited in the Indian Ayurvedic Journal titled 'A Case Report Regarding Management of Grahani Dosha Through Ayurveda' establishes the effectiveness of dosha-specific diets in managing lifestyle-related diseases, specifically Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

What does it lead to

Taking a personalized approach to manage lifestyle-related diseases by adopting a dosha-specific diet as recommended in Ayurveda may be the path to optimal health care for individuals.
