Food is not only essential for survival but also a familiar comforter, has cultural significance, and is a bonding element at social occasions. We hardly think beyond the tantalizing smell and appetizing look of a dish before we take a helping. Only if we were a little more mindful, we could make food work harder for us. Food can be much more than the energy and nutrition storehouse we turn to 3 times a day.

Know yourself

No two individuals are alike. Each one of us is made up of a unique combination of factors, making our body requirements distinct. Let's look at what sets us apart at a fundamental level, and how this influences our unique nutritional requirements.

  • Doshas – Ayurveda says that the 5 elements of nature (earth, fire, water, air, and ether) manifest themselves in everything in different proportions. This combination is expressed as doshas in our bodies. We all have one of the 3 doshas, Kapha, Pitta, or Vata, dominant in our body. Doshas guide us on what to eat and what to avoid. For example, a Vata person is advised to consume warm drinks and food.
  • Gut health – Our digestive system's main role is to break down food and absorb the nutrients. But how efficiently is it functioning? Also, what's the environment of an individual's gut microbiome? If someone is facing digestive issues like frequent bloating, it only makes sense for them to choose their food wisely.
  • Lifestyle – The energy and nutrient requirement of a desk-bound individual differ greatly from someone active in the field. If they eat similar meals, one of them won't be getting the nutrition they need.
  • Health goals – The diet requirements and meal plans depend on the health goals of an individual. A young man might aspire to have six-pack abs, while a young woman may desire glowing skin and shiny hair. Both of them will have different foods and portions on their plates.
  • Diet preferences – Whether driven by culture, upbringing, or personal taste, people have different preferences for their food. Most often, what you like is also what you eat the most. Notice yourself — are you always veering towards the dessert counter?

What's the way ahead

It is crucial to understand and honour the unique constitution of each individual. Once we do so, we begin the journey to achieve optimal health and longevity.

It's time we say no to a one-size-fits-all approach towards meals. Know yourself to discover what foods work the best for your body.
